Has anyone else been hearing about the "less is more" trend? Have you been considering wearing gloves and purchasing large, shoulder-padded dresses? Before going out and buying up these trends from your bookmarked fast-fashion website, it'd be best to review what's up and coming from the latest New York Fashion Week and make the decision for yourself of what you want to participate in and adopt when the Fall and Winter seasons roll around.
In this post, I call out the trends that I think are the most interesting or wearable from NYFW F/W 2023 shows. The runway is where most trends are commonly showcased, so it's best to look to the source for how they're being translated into clothing.
The first trend I spotted were gloves being worn in a variety of styles. I was looking out for this one as gloves have been making a reappearance in a lot of celebrity red carpet looks, bridal fashion, and even on my favorite Love Island cast member, Olivia!
Although, is it just me, or are gloves too "costume-y" when they come in a latex fabric? I love the Kate Barton look above, but the gloves are giving more "cat woman" than anything else. I like the approach that Sandy Liang and Dion Lee took more with their short or mesh see-through gloves. To make this accessory work in modern day, it has to fit within the outfit and not appear as an "add on".
I swear, what is up with more green popping up on the runway?! I love green, don't get me wrong, but I'm tired of it! And mostly because it just doesn't look good on me. Why can't neons be back or have yellow in the convo?
Besides that, green definitely made a reappearance with designers like Michael Kors and Tory Burch bringing it in their collections. I appreciate how Tory Burch used it as a pop of color rather than going for a monochrome look like Michael Kors did.
Bows showed up in my favorite runway shows. Although, they have taken on a different form than their normal voluptuous, eccentric, "camp" style.
Now, bows are being worn in a "ballet-core" fashion as they are thinner and hold less shape. The bows from the runway look more like ribbon which I love! I am definitely going to try and bring these into my style, maybe for a Coachella outfit? Not sure yet, but I cannot get over how cool it is to bring into your makeup. Simone Rocha ate with this ribbon appliqué on her models.
The drama sash is back. These used to be on every prom look and now it's gotten the reappearance it deserves. This has been taking the influencer style by storm as the brand, Fancí Club, has been pumping out mesh dresses and tops that have floral, ruffle details.
Again, Sandy Liang just does not miss with how trends are incorporated. It feels fresh and modern with how she added these accents to her looks. I want that brown dress I show above so badly.
I wanted to include my favorite men's fashion from the shows as I have found myself getting more and more inspiration from men's fashion in recent months. This could be because a lot of trends for women right now revolve around typical men's accessories, like ties and vests, or it could just be an effect of gender becoming less and less prominent in our society. Whatever the case may be, I am loving the men's outfits shown this season and am looking for ways to incorporate them into my own style.
First, we have to discuss skirts over trousers. This brings us back to Hannah Montana days where she'd step out in jeans and a sparkly skirt for an event like the Kids Choice Awards, but now, we are seeing this pairing come up in a more sophisticated way. I think it is very fashion-forward to layer a mini pleated skirt over some matching-colored trousers for women and then switching out a longer skirt for a men's take. I have already been seeing this translate to some TikTokers I follow and am excited to see this evolve.
Lastly, I really liked seeing the zip up hoodie and collared shirt with tie pairing. This felt really fresh and I could easily see this being brought into the rotation for many people or even some celebrity street styles. Could anyone else see Maeve Reilly styling her clients in this kind of look?
I captured some looks that I thought could easily translate into anyone's wardrobe. Some details to note would be mini skirts, see through and patterned long dresses, silver accessories, and white mini dresses.
