With the sun lingering past 7 o'clock, the return of beach volleyball, Beyoncé releasing new music, jackets exchanged for trendy trucker hats, and day parties planned in Partiful… it can only mean one thing; it’s officially time for Spring and festival season!
Since Coachella is right around the corner, I’ve started to narrow down my search for what I want my outfits to be. Countless hours of thrifting and scrolling on Pinterest later, have led me to discern the themes and trend projections set to dominate the festival grounds.
In years past, the Coachella style has been contrasting the typical “rave girl” aesthetic by being understated and casual to match the “too cool” attitude of not dressing up for something big because it comes across as try-hard or cringe. However, I think now we are shifting back to more OG Coachella aesthetics that fit either Western 70s style or Gen Z TikTok grunge.
The first trend that I want to follow, is the micro short. It all started with Kendall Jenner not wearing bottoms over her tights which has now translated into people wearing short shorts again. This is a great trend to try at Coachella since it can be styled in so many different ways. My favorite styling of this trend that I found is Madison Beer wearing a white lace set with sneakers and an oversized jacket.
Next, I found that layering has been showing up in a different form. Wearing a skirt over pants might remind you of the early Hannah Montana days, but now it’s transformed into a chic way to add texture and interest to an outfit. Also, I have loved seeing bras layered over t-shirts. The mesh see-through style has been so prevalent for the last couple of years that now showing off your undergarments is being styled by putting them over a person’s top. Here you can see Emma Chamberlain taking on this look with an Acne Studios outfit.
Every year my friends and I like to pick a theme to dress up as for each day. This time around, I wanted to emulate and be inspired by the style of the people headlining Coachella. So choose your fighter: are you going for a cool and androgynous Peggy Gou look, a girly and sparkly Sabrina Carpenter set, a Lana Del Rey boho vibe, a post-apocalyptic Doja Cat fit, or a 90s punk Gwen Stefani era?
As Coachella's fashion trends evolve, we find ourselves oscillating between the understated, casual vibe of previous years and a return to more iconic Coachella aesthetics. Embracing micro shorts, layering, and playful nods to pop culture icons, offer a canvas for personal expression and creativity. I can’t wait to see what people wear this year and will be sure to report back!
